PREFACE

As the sun sets in the town of Chacala, Mexico the sound of the conch shell emerges signaling

the beginning of a ritual. The heartbeat of this ritual is the Huehuetl, an ancient Aztec drum.

Played by the leader, it drives the dancers forward in homage to the forces and gods of nature.

This ritual embodies the duality of Mexico: ancient traditions coexisting with the pressures of

modern culture, politics, and social struggle. Chacala is both an homage and a reflection

offering to the roots of my town and a reminder of the sacredness of the land, its people, and its

stories.

A medida que cae el sol en el pueblo de Chacala, México, surge el sonido del caracol,

anunciando el comienzo de un ritual. El latido de este ritual es el huehuetl, un antiguo tambor

azteca. Tocado por el guía, convoca a los danzantes a realizar un homenaje a las fuerzas y a los

dioses de la naturaleza. Este ritual representa la dualidad de México: tradiciones ancestrales que

se mezclan con las presiones de la cultura moderna, la política y dilemas sociales.

La obra Chacala es tanto un homenaje como una reflexión. Es una ofrenda a las raíces del lugar

donde crecí y un recordatorio de lo sagrado de la tierra, su gente y sus historias.
